Our optometrist can provide comprehensive eye exams and explanations of your visual acuity, helping you see the world. In this guide, we will explore what 20/20 vision entails, how it is measured, and the factors that can affect your vision. Whether you have questions about your vision or want to improve your eye health, Eyewear Optical in Shallowford, Brainerd, Cleveland, and Athens is here to assist you.
The term "20/20" is a common way to calculate normal visual acuity, which means you can see at 20 feet what a person with normal vision can see at 20 feet. In other words, you can see details and read letters on an eye chart from a standard distance of 20 feet, just like an individual with average vision.
During an eye examination, you will be asked to stand a certain distance from the chart (usually 20 feet for adults) and read the smallest line of letters you can see. If you accurately read the line designated for 20/20, vision indicates you have normal visual acuity at that distance.
Some individuals can test better than 20/20 on a standard visual acuity test. Visual acuity is measured on a Snellen eye chart, and the top line represents 20/20 vision, considered normal visual acuity. However, the chart includes smaller lines of letters or symbols that individuals with better-than-average vision can read from a distance greater than 20 feet.
It’s important to understand that 20/20 vision only applies to your visual acuity or the clarity and sharpness of your vision. For example, color perception, depth perception, peripheral vision, eye tracking, and eye focusing are different visual skills tested through various methods. Therefore, even if you or your child are told you have 20/20 vision by your doctor or your child’s school, you must visit an eye doctor for a comprehensive vision exam.
